If God created the world – who created God? And if the Big Bang is the beginning of everything, where did it come from? What came before it?

These two questions come from two worlds that tend to fight each other – science and religion – yet they are really the same question. The scientific and religious answers to the beginning of the universe are incomplete.

Those of you who feel the urge to ask these questions already know, even if not by name, the most important principle in philosophy that most people outside academia have never heard of.

The principle was formulated by the mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in the early eighteenth century. Its name is the Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR).

PSR states that everything must have a sufficient reason for its existence, its form, and for being this way rather than another. Nothing is permitted simply to be. There are no brute facts. There is only thought that grew tired too soon and declared its stopping point the end of the road.

Go back to the two questions we opened with. “God created the world” merely moves the question one step backward: who created God? And who created whoever created God? Why only one God? If the answer is that God simply exists, without reason or cause, then this is precisely the brute fact that the believer refuses to accept when the universe and the Big Bang are concerned. On the scientific side, the same move appears in different words. If the Big Bang is the beginning, the laws of nature are “simply given”; there is no explanation of where they came from or where the Big Bang came from, and the stopping point remains exactly where it was. The same problem in a new costume.

I once dreamed that I was arguing with a man of faith. I argued for logic; he argued that knowledge has limits, that the ways of God are hidden, that some things must be accepted on faith. As the argument intensified, his claims grew more desperate, until he rose in anger and shouted at me: “I will still find a reason to prove that you are wrong!” – and at that moment he was defeated. An anecdote, especially one from a dream, is not an argument, of course. But notice what happened: to challenge the supremacy of logic, he had to search for a reason. He had to play on the field of logic – and thereby confirmed what he was trying to refute.

This is the trap, and this is the deep nature of PSR: it cannot be refuted, because every refutation rests on giving reasons. Anyone who tries to prove that some things exist without reason builds an argument – a chain of reasons – and through the very effort surrenders to the principle being attacked. It is like sawing off the branch you are sitting on, or shouting “I am silent!” This trap does not prove that the universe obeys the principle, although I will argue that it does; at the very least, it proves that rational thought cannot relinquish it. As for existence itself, that is where we are going.

The classical skeptic can claim that the universe simply exists, without any reason, and leave it at that. Anyone who abandons the principle once loses the right to ask “why” about anything else. If the universe, together with its laws, is permitted to exist without reason, then disease is permitted to do so as well, gravity is permitted to reverse itself tomorrow morning, and your response to this post simply happened, for no reason at all. A brute fact is magic without a magician: a universe pulled from a hat, without a hat and without anyone to pull it out. Anyone who still asks why has already returned to the principle. Even rebellion against it uses it.

Two paths seem to remain. The first stops at the first station – whether the Big Bang, the creator, or a law of nature – and declares a stopping point. The second refuses to stop: an infinite chain of causes, with no beginning. Every cause has an earlier cause of its own, without end – an infinite regress. An infinite chain of “because” is not an explanation, just as an endless corridor of doors is not a house. The first cause and the infinite regress are two ends of the same failure: the first stops too early; the second never stops.

What about chance? Throw a die. The result is called random, but it is the precise product of the conditions of the throw: the force applied, the angle, the wind, the friction, the structure of the surface, and the remaining variables. The randomness is really ignorance of the data. Given all the data, one can in principle predict the result.

The serious objection comes from quantum theory: a radioactive atom decays at a particular moment, and according to the standard quantum account no physical cause determined that moment. To answer it, we first need to pause over one distinction, because ordinary usage tends to blur it. A cause is something that precedes an event in time and produces it. A reason, or ground, is the explanation of why something is this way rather than another. A reason in this sense is an explanation only; no guiding hand is hidden within it. Leibniz’s principle requires a reason, and a temporally prior cause is only one kind of reason. A reason may also be a structure, a necessity, or an internal identity. The individual quantum event has no cause. The decay obeys a mathematical law that physics predicts with unparalleled precision. The “randomness” itself is regulated. If a hidden cause is discovered tomorrow that determines the moment of decay, the principle wins by an even simpler route. Both possibilities work in its favor. Quantum theory left the demand for a reason intact and moved it from the individual event to the law that governs it.

The central point is this: both the first cause and the regress search for an event – something that happened, something one can point to and say, “Everything began there.” But PSR demands a reason, and a reason may be necessity. The difference between the two is the difference between everything and nothing. An event always permits the question of what came before it. Logical necessity does not stand in time at all, so the question loses its meaning. No one asks when it first became true that 2+2=4, and no one searches for the event that caused it. 2+2=4 follows necessarily from the internal structure of numbers themselves. The definition does not create the truth; it reveals it. The explanation lies within the structure itself.

Mathematics is full of such structures. Arrange all the positive fractions smaller than 1 by magnitude. Is there a first among them, smaller than all the rest? Never. Anyone who chooses one millionth will find that half a millionth is smaller, and anyone who chooses that will find one smaller still. Every fraction has a smaller fraction; the structure has no beginning – yet it is fully defined, and it exists. A structure can exist without any first moment, so long as an internal and necessary law orders it. One may object that such a structure is an abstraction, while the universe is real. But we have already seen in previous posts that the real obeys the abstract with perfect precision – that was the entire point of Where Is the Law of Gravity? A “first cause” resembles the first person in a genealogy: one can always ask about that person’s parents. Logical necessity resembles the laws of genetics themselves – the condition by virtue of which there is any genealogy at all. The answer to the regress is necessity: something that does not sit in time and therefore needs no beginning.

If someone now claims that God is precisely this necessity, needing no beginning, the principle itself replies: a personal God, with desires and choices, is a collection of brute facts. Why these attributes rather than others? Why one God rather than two, or infinitely many? With logical necessity, these questions are answered by the structure itself – the “otherwise” is simply impossible. With a creator, they remain open. Declaring necessity is not demonstrating it.

What is the one thing whose negation cannot even be thought? Try to conceive absolute nothingness. Did you imagine darkness? Darkness is a phenomenon. A void? A void is space, and space is already something. The true “nothing” is less than absence: it is the negation of everything, including the negation of the possibility that anything could exist. Here logic locks the door. For anything ever to appear – even by chance, even once – at least the possibility of its appearing must exist. But possibility is already something: a logical space, a condition, a structure. Absolute nothingness, by definition, contains no possibilities. If absolute nothingness had ever prevailed, nothing could have emerged from it – even the possibility of emerging would not have been there. Yet something exists: you, reading this line.

The conclusion is necessary: absolute nothingness has never prevailed. Existence never received permission to begin, because it never needed it. Existence never emerged from nothing. Logic needs no external authorization; it is the prior condition of every possible question about being and absence.

The real debate therefore takes place far beneath the familiar field of religion versus science. It is between those willing to accept a final given and those who refuse it. Faith stops at divine will. Unbelief stops at fact. Rationalism asks only what is necessary.

Every system collapses at the same point: it accepts the existence of something without a sufficient reason – sometimes a creator, sometimes a law, sometimes a first moment. In every form, logic is asked to bow precisely where it should explain.

The form of the question must therefore change. Instead of searching for the first thing, we search for the necessity that needs no license from outside. In Where Is the Law of Gravity? we encountered a candidate: the mathematical structure that matter obeys, the one found everywhere and nowhere. The claim I am presenting here for examination is that this structure is exactly what PSR is looking for – a necessity that needs no first moment, an internal law by virtue of which there is any chain at all. Do not believe me; examine whether anything else can meet the demand.

If everything has a sufficient reason, the next question is already at the door, and it is the greatest of all: what is the reason for the structure itself? Why this mathematics, these laws, this form? Why these physical constants rather than others? This question has an answer, and it requires ground we have not yet laid. We will reach it.

The principle itself does not stop at physics. If nothing is permitted to be arbitrary – what becomes of arbitrary power? We will reach that too.


The full argument, step by step. Steps 1–5 stand on their own; steps 6–7 rely on PSR in its full definition: a reason why a thing is this way rather than another.

  1. Basic premise: existence exists (“there is being”) – a direct and unmediated fact of consciousness. Every attempt to deny it activates what it seeks to deny.

  2. If there is existence, then: a. Either existence is necessary – it cannot fail to exist; b. Or existence is contingent – there could have been absolute nothingness.

  3. If existence is contingent, then the possibility of its existence had to exist – because what is not possible cannot occur, even by chance. This is not possibility in the mind of an observer, but a condition of possibility: a space in which existence can be without contradicting the very conditions of reality. The reality of this abstraction was the point of Where Is the Law of Gravity?: matter obeys it with perfect precision. The possibility of existence is itself a kind of being. It is not absolute nothingness. It is potential, a logical space, a structure that contains conditions. Absolute nothingness contains no possibilities, just as it contains nothing at all. Therefore, if existence is contingent, absolute nothingness has never prevailed.

  4. This possibility must always exist. If there had been a point at which possibility itself did not exist, absolute nothingness would have prevailed – and from absolute nothingness nothing could ever emerge: not something, not the possibility of something, not a law that permits such a possibility. Absolute nothingness is a closed state; if it ever prevailed, it prevails forever.1

  5. This possibility is necessary: its absence is absolute nothingness, and absolute nothingness is not a possible state – because a possible state is already a possibility, precisely what absolute nothingness does not contain. The alternative does not even have the status of a possibility.

  6. Given PSR, the transition from possibility to actual existence cannot be contingent either. Every actualization requires a sufficient reason, and it can reside only in the substrate itself – there is nothing else in which it could reside. The consequence is not added from outside; it follows from the structure: 4 is not one of the possible results of 2+2; it is its necessary result. If there is no reason for the actualization, it is arbitrary, and PSR is violated. There is no middle way: a reason that merely “inclines without necessitating”, as Leibniz himself proposed, leaves “this way rather than another” unexplained – which means it is not sufficient. A sufficient reason, in the sense defined, closes the question. What follows from a necessary substrate by virtue of a sufficient reason is itself necessary.

  7. First conclusion: existence is necessary. It is not a fortunate event or an emergence from the void. Reality is the consequence of its necessary substrate – it could not have failed to exist.


  1. Note on “possibility”: there is no separation here between logic and being. According to Ontological Mathematics, reality can be understood because logic is the structure of reality itself, not an external tool for describing it. “Possibility” is therefore a real logical space, not an abstract concept: a nonempty set of consistent states – and such a set is already an entity, already information. Absolute nothingness is the empty set, from which nothing grows. Possibility is not yet actualization, but neither is it nothingness.
